The DNA test result grids on this page were created with the DNA User Item. Multiple DNA User Items were added to the page, one for each example. In this case, the same tests were used by all the User Items, but in a real site, you could use the same or different results.

The test results were read from the DNA Log of a TMG project.

The DNA User Item Windows page includes screenshots and descriptions of the DNA User Item windows.

Caption

This is a very simple example showing a single group of results. We can tell that all the tests are in the same group because they all have the same background color.

The text for the heading row at the top is from the DNA Grid's "Title" property.

The yellow-background column titles indicate columns where all the test results are not the same.

Haplogroups in black or white text (depending on the background color) indicate the Confirmed Haplogroup. Haplogroups in red italic text indicate the Predicted Haplogroup. The user may choose among these options for displaying the haplogroup: None, Best, Both, Confirmed, or Predicted. Haplogroups are shown in this example using the "Best" setting, i.e., the Confirmed Haplogroup is shown unless it is empty. If it is empty, the Predicted Haplogroup is shown unless it is empty.

To save horizontal space, the haplogroup column is not shown in any further examples.

Column titles with red text indicate fast-moving markers.

In this example, and in most of the subsequent examples, the selected test type is the 37-marker test from FTDNA. Two of the participants (Kit1001 and Kit1002) actually took the FTDNA 67-marker test while Kit1003 took the 37-marker test.

As in Example 1A, all the tests are in the same group. In this case, however, the DNA Grid was configured to compute modal values for the group. The yellow-background marker value cells indicate values that are not the same as the modal value. Note that the modal values themselves are not displayed.

In this example, the test type was changed to the FTDNA 67-marker test. Two of the particpants took that test and so all the columns have values. The row for Kit1003 shows only the marker values converted from the test he took, the FTDNA 37-marker test.

Due to the layout of the page (fixed-width, centered content), the test result grid won't fit horizontally in the space alloted to it. Use the scroll bar to see the other columns.

This is the last of the examples with one group. In this example, the marker set has been restricted to the columns where the marker values are not all the same.

Note that the column headings do not have the yellow background because all the columns shown have variations. Also, the "column number" row above the column headings shows the column numbers (9, 23, 24, 32, 36) and not a sequential number (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

This is the caption.

This example includes multiple groups.

There are now multiple modal value rows. There is an overall modal value row (the white-background row at the top) and well as modal value rows for each group.

The name of each group is included in the results, but as shown in subsequent examples, you do not have to display the group names.

Because all three members of Group 1 have the value 12 for marker DYS426, but all three members of Group 2 have the value 13 for that marker, there is a tie in the overall modal value. The tie produces the result "{12,13}". When ties occur in modal values, the modal cell value is highlighted as shown.

Marker cells that differ from the modal value are always shown in yellow, no matter background color is used for the group. All the sites I saw that used multiple color combinations for modal differences were harder to scan than sites that kept it constant.

This example is similar to the above except for these changes:

  1. The group name rows have been turned off. The "Show Group Number" option has been enabled, so there is an additional column. This is what you might do when the group names are not important. You can include both the group names and the group numbers if you want.
  2. The modal values rows have been removed from the groups, but the overall modal values row at the top has been retained.

This example is the same as 2B except it uses different group colors. Colors are determined by the "Group Class", and you can pick from a list of 36 group classes, "Group Class 1" to "Group Class 36".

By default, the Group Class will be set by the initial position of the group in the list of groups, but you can set the Group Class to a different value if you choose. In this example, I chose "Group Class 3" for Group 1, and "Group Class 4" for Group 2.

See the help page for DNA Grid Groups to see the color definitions.

This example shows that the Abbreviated Signatures option works for multiple groups, too.
