Harry Wood

b. 20 May 1874, d. June 1950
Harry Wood was born on 20 May 1874 at Rawdon, Hants County, Nova Scotia.1 He married Maud Hattie Lawrence, daughter of Solomon H. Lawrence and Mary Sophia Graham, on 31 December 1898 at Arlington, Massachusetts. He was 24. She was 28; the ceremony was performed by Elder Richard Bullard.2,3 Harry Wood was the owner of a delivery business.4 He and Maud Hattie Lawrence were divorced.4 Harry Wood married Ethel Smith.5 Harry Wood died in June 1950 at Oxford, Nova Scotia, Canada, at age 76.6
     From Arlington book:
He was educated in the public schools of hs native town, and remained with his father until he was twenty years of age. He then worked two years for Michael Casey on his farm at Centre Rawdon.
He came to Arlington, Massachusetts, and took charge of the stables at the school of the feeble minded, remaining for fifteen months. From here he went to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and entered the employ of his brothers, the firm of Wood Brothers, engaged in the general express business.
Fifteen months later he returned to Arlington and was in the employ of Johnson's Express for eight months. Shortly after this he engaged in the express business for himself, his brother, Burpee, of Portsmouth, being intereted in the venture. [The business of?] Wood Brothers as formed by them did a general express business between Arlington and Boston. "Their first place of business was at the old Robbins stable, corner of Academy street and Massachusetts avenue, since removed. After two years they removed to the Chase stables ,at the rear of the Universalist church, where they keep their stock at the present time, and also at the stables on Broadway.
The first office was at the house of Mr. Wood, and the first down-town office was near the present office, but later was established at Water street. In February, 1908, they removed to their present place of business on Massachusetts Avenue. Wood Brothers at present keep 18 horses, running six express wagons to and from Boston. Mr. Wood attends to the Arlington business, and his brother, Roy, looks out for the Boston trade. Mr. Wood attends the church of the Latter Day Saints in Somerville.3
From Wilfred Wood Family History: [Harry] went to the U. S. when a young man. Located at Arlington, Mass., and went into the express business, later taking on furniture and piano moving. Dec 31, 1898 he married Maude Lawrence of Kings Counts [sic], N. S. Tiring of the express business he purchased a home in Burlington, Mass. Later, married Ethel Smith of Arlington, Mass.1
From Muriel (Cardinal) Johnston: When we lived at Delano Park we used to ride out to the farm in Burlington on hot summer evenings. Dad [Walter Cardinal #5279] had a Hudson. Harry's farm was at Wood's Corner; he had a small store and great ice cream. Ethel (2nd wife) was nice to us. Harry had disowned my mother when she had married "that Catholic gangster from Boston", but by then he had somewhat relented. I remember before he returned to Nova Scotia, he and Ethel came to visit us at Ridgemont Street (I was either a Jr or Sr at Brighton High School, so it was '45 or '46). He went out to the kitchen where mom [Alta Florence Wood] was and he said "Alta, you got the best of the bunch", alluding to Walter.5
From Mary (Cloherty) Cardinal: Alta drove us out to Harry's farm in Burlington when Peter was a baby. He slipped a ten dollar bill into Peter's blankets. When we were driving home, Alta said that was more than he ever gave his grandchildren [i.e., Alta's children].7
